Lady Vikings ramp up for tournaments

The Charlo Lady Vikings seem to be firing on all the right cylinders as they continue to dominate 14-C competition. Last week, Charlo pulled out a pair of convincing wins, downing Hot Springs by 27 points, followed by a 41-24 win over Arlee the next day. Earlier in the week, Charlo edged out a win over Mission, winning 29-26.
The Lady Vikings didn’t waste any time gaining the advantage against Hot Springs, as Charlo broke out to a 7-4 lead at the beginning of the second quarter. By the half, the Lady Vikings had built an 18-9 lead and never looked back.
It was more of the same in the second half, as the Vikings went on a 10-4 run in the third, finishing the game out by holding the Lady Savage Heat to only two fourth-quarter points. By the end, Charlo had taken complete control of the game, winning 42-15.
Kinley Pope spearheaded Charlo’s win with a game-high 13 points, while Deondra Brown contributed 12.
For Hot Springs, Hannah Retallick led the way with five points. With the loss, Hot Springs fell to 0-8 in conference and 0-14 overall.
On Friday, Charlo ventured to Arlee, where the Lady Vikings trounced the Scarlets 41-24.
By holding Arlee to only two points in the opening quarter, Charlo jumped out to a commanding 16-2 lead, but the Scarlets wouldn’t go down without a fight. The Scarlets showed life in the second frame, outscoring Charlo 9-4 to enter the break down 20-11. Arlee continued to prevent the Lady Vikings from scoring big numbers in the third quarter, as the Scarlets went on an 8-5 run to pull within six at the beginning of the fourth.
The Lady Vikings got back to work in the fourth, burying Arlee with a 16-5 run that granted Charlo a 41-24 victory.
Pope led all scorers for the second game in a row, tallying 19, while Jordan Ludeman contributed another eight.
For Arlee, Mahalia Hendren led her team with nine points, while Whitney Malatare added five.
Against Mission, both teams struggled offensively, as Mission took a one-point lead after the first quarter, leading 7-6. At the half, Mission expanded its lead to 17-15. The Lady Vikings’ 14-2 run in the third was the difference, as the Lady Bulldogs held Charlo scoreless in the fourth.
Hoyt led Charlo with 11 points, while Pope added 10.
For Mission, Steph Lewandowski paced her team with 12 points, while Bryanna Steele added seven.
Charlo begins postseason play Feb. 16 at the District Tournament in Ronan.
