POLSON — A man and his two dogs went for a boat ride on Aug. 25 at about 10:30 a.m. The boat left shore at Paradise Cove, a RV resort with cabins on the east shore of Flathead Lake, according to the man’s wife.
What happened after that is a mystery since a female who lives on one of the islands near the Narrows in Flathead Lake called dispatch at about noon. On her return home from the mainland, the woman noticed a boat with a dog in it, according to Karen Sargeant, Lake County Sheriff’s Office public information officer.
Deputies immediately responded in the LCSO boat, rescuing the dog and recovering another dog on shore, shivering.
After running the hull numbers on the 21-foot fiberglass boat, deputies contacted the man’s spouse. They also called out Lake County Search and Rescue and the Polson Volunteer Fire Department to join the search for the man.
Sargeant noted drift indicators were used to determine which way lake water was moving.
Releasing the fireboat at approximately 3 p.m., the other boats continued searching all afternoon until the storm blew in about 7 p.m. Before returning to shore, they took GPS coordinates and returned to the Narrows area Monday morning to continue combing the area for the missing man.
