District judge selection begins

POLSON — Judge C. B. McNeil, judge for the 20th Judicial District, which includes Lake and Sanders counties, will retire on Sept. 5, leaving a vacancy.

The Judicial Nomination Commission will interview the applicants who applied for McNeil’s position by Aug. 7. Applying were Steven Norman Eschenbacher, JoAnn Jayne (Joey), James A. Manley, James William Raymond, Mark Alan Russell and John Conn Schulte.

The public has until Sept. 9 to view the applications online through a link available at http://www.courts.mt.gov and submit their comments by email, print or telephone. Comments will become part of the applicant’s file and will be posted on the commission’s web page.

The JNC will forward the names of three to five nominees to Governor Steve Bullock by Oct. 3. Governor Bullock’s deadline for appointing Judge McNeil’s replacement is Oct. 30, and the appointee will serve until January 2015. Judicial Nomination commission members are District Judge Richard Simonton, Glendive; Shirley Ball, Nashua; Mona Charles, Kalispell; Patrick Kelly, Miles City; Lane Larson, Billings, Ryan Rusche, Columbia Falls; and Paul Tuss, Havre.
