RAVALLI — Witnesses who were first to arrive at the scene of an early morning August 18, two-car Ravalli Hill wreck said they called to report a suspected drunk driver three minutes prior to the crash.
According to Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Randy Owens, a 1999 Honda Accord crossed the yellow line and collided with a 2011 Dodge Avenger.
Driver of the Accord, a 25-year-old Ronan man, who was identified by witnesses as Vern (Toby) Fisher, Jr., was killed in the crash.
The other occupants of the Accord, one man and one woman, were airlifted to St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula. The woman was in critical but stable condition as of Monday. The man’s condition was unknown.
The driver of the Avenger was airlifted to a Kalispell hospital after an initial transport to St. Luke’s Hospital in Ronan. The woman was in critical but stable condition on Monday.
Witness Darlene Beeks said she and her husband called 911 at 3:18 a.m. to report a suspected drunk driver they were following south on Hwy. 93. At 3:21 a.m. she called to report the wreck.
“It was definitely a drunk driving accident,” Beeks said. “There is no doubt about it. They were swerving all over the road.”
Owens said the crash is still under investigation and that it is yet to be determined if alcohol was a factor.
