News from the Polson High Cheer Squad
POLSON — Polson High School Cheer Squad and coaches drove to Cheney, Wash. July 15 - 18 for the Universal Cheer Association camp. Twenty female and male cheerleaders attended with head coaches Alysha Valentine and Marete Frame and assistant coach Trae Fouty.
During the four-day UCA camp, cheerleaders learn dance routines, stunts, cheers, and leadership skills. The cheerleaders are taught a cheer and dance and must perform it in front of UCA staff for evaluation each night. On the final day, the Polson squad performed in a competition that included more than 300 cheerleaders. They were to perform as if they were in a game and half time. The Polson Cheerleaders performed one defensive sideline cheer, a crowd participation dance, along with the half time show of a dance and cheer that included stunts learned at camp.
The awards are given on the final day of camp, and are judged by the UCA staff. A leadership award is decided by the other squads at the camp.
The Polson Cheerleaders were awarded first place on their game day challenge and halftime routine, a superior trophy for receiving superior ribbons all week, the leadership award, and the spirit stick every night.
UCA also holds tryouts for All American individual honors. The girls must perform a dance, a cheer, and their best jump. The boys must perform a cheer, their best jump, and their best partner stunt. They are judged and chosen by the UCA staff. Polson is proud to announce that seven out of the 30 individuals chosen were Polson seniors Kayla Forman, Shaelyn Simshaw, Jewel Zakit-Ackermann, Mollybeth Hendrix, Alicia Sicz, Jared Rubel, and Dalton Noyes. These seven seniors have been invited to cheer in the New Years Parade in London. Forman, Simshaw, and Zakit-Ackermann are two-year All American Cheerleaders. Forman and Simshaw attended the London Parade last year, and are honored to have a second opportunity for another trip that will create lasting friendships and memories.
The Polson Cheer Squad was very thankful to all of the businesses and community members that helped make all of the amazing opportunities possible. They also thanked Providence St. Joseph Medical Center for sponsoring one of their camp uniforms
The squad will hold a free car wash on Aug. 3 at Polson Bay Grocery for continued fundraising through donations.
They also encourage everyone to come show their Pirate spirit by attending the home games.
