News from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai TribesNatural Resources Department

PABLO — The Tribal Fisheries Program announces the availability of a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for management of Flathead Lake fisheries. The DEIS tiers off the Flathead Lake Co-Management Plan written in 2000. The document titled “Proposed Strategies To Benefit Native Species by Reducing the Abundance of Lake Trout in Flathead Lake, Montana” was released Friday, June 21 and is available in the Federal Register/ Vol.78, No.120/Friday, June 21, 2013/Notices.

Tribal Fisheries Program and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks have worked since 2000 to implement measures to increase the number of native fish in Flathead Lake while maintaining a recreational fishery. The DEIS describes four alternatives with differing degrees of lake trout suppression. It analyzes potential benefits to native bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout as well as the biological, social, and economic impacts from a non-native lake trout suppression program.

Locations where the DEIS is available for review are: www.mackdays.com under the DEIS tab, and www.flatheadlakeeis.net. Hard copies of the document are available for viewing at the Fisheries Program office of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, located at 406 6th Avenue E, Polson, Montana. The 45-day comment period will end on August 5, 2013.

A public meeting will be held in late July. Time and location of the public meeting will be announced in the coming weeks.
