POLSON — Kay Witham, longtime Polson resident, was honored Wednesday, May 22 by P.E.O. Chapter CA for her 60-year membership in the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
Witham was treated to an elegant afternoon tea and a tour of historic Rocky Point Lodge. Current president Linda Reynolds of Cut Bank and Montana State Chapter past president Jean Barragan of Lakeside also attended.
In April, Witham also attended the 60th reunion of her graduating class from Cottey College in Nevada, Mo. The college is owned by the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
“When I was at Cottey for the reunion, the years just melted away,” Witham said. “Even though it has been so many years since we were together in school, it was as though we’d come back after a long weekend or summer break. The way Cottey girls bond together is astounding. That’s one thing that makes attending Cottey so special.”
Chapter CA is one of three P.E.O. chapters in Polson and more than 80 chapters in Montana. There are more than 250,000 P.E.O. members in the U.S. and Canada; all work to fund grants and scholarships for women, as well as Cottey College.
Several local women have qualified for either grants or low interest loans that have helped them complete their educations.
Local high school girls have been introduced to Cottey College by attending special weeklong summer workshops at Cottey College. Several have attended and graduated from the college, which is currently transitioning from a two-year liberal arts college to a four-year school with special emphasis on women’s leadership.
