Dollars for Scholars awards $19,750 to students

News from Polson Dollars for Scholars

POLSON — Polson Dollars for Scholars awarded 20 scholarships totaling $19,750 to Polson High School seniors and former Polson High School graduates who are currently attending an accredited two-year, four-year, community college, university or vocational school.

Two new scholarships were provided this year.  One $500 scholarship was set up from VetCare Montana by Spring and James McKee for students interested in animal sciences. Dollars for Scholars matched this scholarship to increase it to $1,000. Katie Hunsucker was the recipient of this scholarship.  

In memory of Don Smith, Barbara Smith set up a $500 scholarship, also matched by Polson Dollars for Scholars. Don was the owner of Beacon Tire and a member of the Polson school board for many years. The $1,000 Don Smith Memorial scholarship was awarded to Jacob Feistner. 

The following $1,000 scholarships were also presented to students who are graduates and currently attending college. Laura Grace Barta received the Dollars for Scholars Continuing Education Scholarship; Peregrine Frissell was awarded the Polson Bay Grocery-Kienas/Mahoney Scholarship; and Chawn DuBack earned the Merle Anderson Memorial Scholarship.

Jonathan Murphy received the Polson District #23 Employees Scholarship. The Fred Barnowsky Scholarship was awarded to Nick Howell.  Heather Howell was awarded the Sue Lanier Memorial Scholarship.  

Seniors at Polson High School were awarded the following scholarships. The Class of ’59 selected Roseanna Stanfield and she received a $1,250 scholarship. Austin Von Tom was awarded the Polson Alumni Classes of 1920-1955 Scholarship for $1,000. The Ruth Walker Scholarship was awarded to Jordon Quinn for $1,000. Sheldon Clairmont was awarded the Montecahto Club Scholarship for $1,500.  Krysta Seville was awarded the $1,000 Polson District #23 Employees Scholarship. Kabrina Cordier was awarded Trusler Family Vocational Scholarship. Polson Dollars for Scholars awarded Sam Kinzle a $1,000 scholarship.  Riley Sampson was awarded a $500 Toby Nelson Scholarship and a $500 John Oberlitner/Theiler Family Scholarship.  

Two $1,000 John Oberlitner/Theiler Family Scholarships were also awarded to Heidi Rausch and Andrew Storro.  An anonymous donor awarded Kayla Duford a $1,000 scholarship.

Polson Dollars for Scholars is a local non-profit organization established in 2002. The purpose of the organization is to expand access to post-secondary educational opportunities for Polson High School graduates. Since its inception Polson Dollars for Scholars has provided 127 students with a hundred twenty seven thousand four hundred  dollars worth of scholarships. 

Tax-deductible donations and fund-raisers provide the funds for scholarships as well as individuals setting up a scholarship fund in memory of a loved one.
