PABLO — “It takes a village in nursing education,” Dr. Katherine Willock, PhD., RN, head of Salish Kootenai College’s nursing program said as she spoke to graduates at the June 7 pinning ceremony.
A part of that village is mothers, fathers, children, significant others and friends who have supported the students, the SKC faculty and staff and the graduates themselves.
Local resident Patricia Kelly — who grew up in the Mission Valley, graduated from nursing school at Montana State University in 1973 and spent 25 years as a United States Army nurse — showed them a photo of herself with a white nurse’s cap at her own graduation.
Just as nurses have transitioned away from white uniforms and starched caps, white stockings and white shoes, Kelly told the graduates they would change in their nursing careers, maybe working in home health, family planning, returning to school or working as a public health nurse.
