ARLEE — An Arlee woman lost her life Friday afternoon when her car struck a commercial truck head-on.
Montana State Trooper Terrance Rosenbaum said Carol Mapston, 72 of Arlee, was southbound in the Schall Flats area when, according to witnesses, her green Cadillac drifted into the northbound lanes and directly into the path of the big rig. After hitting her car, the truck and trailer careened across La Moose Road and into a field. The impact caused debris from the Cadillac to strike and damage a southbound rental vehicle, but the driver and three passengers from California were not injured.
“(The Cadillac) literally exploded,” Rosenbaum said. “Not a fire…but debris.”
The driver of the truck, 48-year-old John R. Kaiserman of Premonton, Utah, was taken to St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula with minor injuries, according to Rosenbaum.
“Alcohol and speed, at this point, do not appear to be a factor,” Rosenbaum said.
The 2:45 p.m. wreck closed a section of Highway 93 north of Arlee for nearly three hours.
