BOZEMAN — Earning a third-place finish at state was sweet for Mission Valley’s Ten Sticks lacrosse team, but the icing on the cake was being awarded Best Sportsmanship — and being nominated by the referees.
That’s a huge accomplishment for a team that values respect and honor over scoring goals and winning games.
The team faced Big Sky Saturday morning during the 2013 Montana State Lacrosse Tournament, and walked away with a decisive 14-7 victory to move into the state semi-finals.
Ten Sticks lost that game 9-5 with a hard fought battle against powerhouse Flathead. The loss moved Ten Sticks into the third-place game against Bozeman’s hometown team on Sunday.
The teams battled throughout regulation play and ended up tied 5-5, but Ten Sticks scored the first goal in overtime to secure the third-place victory.
Three Ten Sticks players were selected for the All State First Team: Dan Lafanier (attack) of Polson; Marium Branson (defense) of St. Ignatius, and Albert Plant (mid-field) of Arlee. All State Second Team honors went to Arlee’s Michael Brown, long stick mid-field. Honorable mention went to Charlo’s Zach Daniels (attack).
