This is the sixth year for the free Community Thanksgiving Dinner, Thursday, Nov. 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., sponsored by the Polson Ministerial Association's Helping Hands Fund in conjunction with Polson Senior Citizens Center at 504 Third Ave. E. What a wonderful story I heard from Tracy Plaiss, this year’s coordinator. According to Tracy, “If something just appears and you don’t know who did it, I guarantee it’s a volunteer, because things like this don’t just happen.”

This event is another example of volunteerism at its best. In the past, 50-plus volunteers were responsible for its success. If you would like to be one of those volunteers, call the Senior Center at 883-4735.

In talking with Tracy, it was learned they intend to be prepared for even more participation this Thanksgiving than in the past. They are preparing 18 turkeys, 120 pounds of potatoes (peeled by the LDS Youth Group), gravy, stuffing and green bean casserole. All of the churches in the area support the dinner by their members' willingness to prepare and donate salads, pies and rolls.

The dinner is free and open to the public and includes food, fellowship and entertainment by local musicians and singers. Donations are gratefully accepted. Last year, more than 350 people attended the holiday dinner, while 68 meals were delivered to people unable to make it to the center. If you need a meal delivered to you, call Polson Senior Center 883-4735 by 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, or if you would like to join the festivities and don’t have transportation, call that same number by 3 p.m. on Wednesday and someone will come pick you up, deliver you to the center, and return you home safe and sound.

In the past people of all ages including families, couples and singles attended the community dinner. Some of the deliveries went to the Polson Fire Department, Polson Police Department, Lake County dispatch center and sheriff’s deputies that were coming on or off shift.
