HELENA — The cross country season came to a close for the Chiefs and Maidens on the grounds of the Bill Roberts Golf Course Saturday as the boys came away with a 14th-place finish while the girls earned 16th.

“I thought we didn’t do bad at all. We just didn’t do good enough, I suppose,” Ronan coach Gale Decker said.

Many of the Chief runners struggled with the hilly, curve filled course as many of them turned in times well above their season best times.

“I don’t know if all the teams were struggling there, or if it was just us that was having a bad day,” Decker said. “It was a pretty challenging course with a lot of ups and downs. We had all of our runners packed together, we just needed them all to be about a minute faster and packed together.”

Danny Romero was one of the few Chief runners that seemed unfazed by the state course as he led Ronan with a time of 17:37 and a 31st-place finish.

Cody Johnson was the Chiefs’ next-best runner, coming in 52nd with a time of 18:02. Kevin Wreblewski turned in a time of 18:55 to come in 90th, Brady Oakland was 91st with a time of 18:56, Jordan Franklin came in 101st with a time of 19:11, Eric Malquist was 102nd at 19:11 and Edmond Dupuis finished 106th with a time of 19:17.

Jade Grey led the Maidens for the first time this season, coming in 44th with a time of 21:24 while Ashley Grandchamp was the only other Ronan girl in the top-100 as she came in 65th with a time of 22:01.

Kiana Howell turned in a time of 24:11 to come in 116th, Rachel Hardy was 118th at 24:42, Hayley Walston turned in a time of 27:32 ti finish 132nd, Emilee Harenburg was 133rd with a time of 27:43 and Christen Falcon came in 134th with a time of 28:21.

According to Decker, the day was rough, but her was very proud of the way his top runners performed.

“Danny has been a little up and down all year long but he chose the perfect time to have his best race of the year,” he said. “There were a few surprises out there Saturday. It was also Jade’s first time being our top girl runner.”

Despite the ups and downs the Ronan runners saw this season, Decker says the season was still a success.

“It was still a good year for us. We have a lot that we can build on for the future,” he said.
