ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo.- Mother Nature threw everything she had at competitors during the National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyo., this past week. Charlo competitor Abby Knight’s mother, Rocky Knight, told tales of extreme weather every which-way. From tornado strength winds and rain, to flooding inside horse trailers to blistering sun and heat upwards of 92 degrees, the rodeo’s 1,500 contestants from three countries at “the world’s largest rodeo” were tested at every turn.
Even so, two Mission Valley high school students placed in the nation’s top 20.
Abby entered the competition in 16th place and climbed to 13th for the finish. She said she already can’t wait for next season so she can get back to nationals and do even better.
“It’s awesome; it’s a great feeling,” Knight said. “I went in there 16th, had a good run, the best that I could do. It was just awesome.”
Prodigy freshman steer wrestler Will Powell came in 19th at the rodeo and said the rodeo was a great experience. Even so, he admitted to feeling a bit intimidated.
“I’m one of the bigger guys among my friends, but all those guys at nationals are 6-foot-5 and weigh 250 pounds,” Powell said. “I’m excited to go back and get a little closer to number one.”
