Editor,

I would like to say “thank you” to all the Ronan and Pablo schoolchildren who I have had the pleasure of working with in the drama program. Over the last few years, we have worked on many plays (five in 2011 and eight in 2012, to be exact). I have seen such wonderful talent, excitement and sweetness from you. Miss Rita and I have been delighted to see each of you (more than 350 last year alone) conquer fears and challenge yourselves to develop new talents. The growth we have witnessed has been amazing and wonderful. Working with you has been a highlight in my life. It was so delightful to see the play that I wrote, “Indy and Anna Jones and the Golden Loon,” come to life with each of your delightful personalities. I would also like to thank the parents of these wonderful children for your assistance in getting them to their rehearsals, helping them learn their lines, being part of the plays, helping sew costumes, apply makeup, wrangle children to where they needed to be and providing food, just to name a few of your many contributions.

I would have liked to have the chance to say all this in person before school let out this year, but I didn’t know if my position as drama assistant would be renewed until the middle of June.

Mrs. Tingey and I are both concerned for the drama program’s future success. So many in the community have donated so much time and money to the performing arts center, and we know it is an important asset to the community. We have seen how the children have grown, not only in the drama program, but in their social skills, overall grades and in their self-esteem. We know that this is important work.

However, we are not privy to all the workings of the school system and the demands it faces. We see only our corner of it. And in our corner, we see more and more children wanting the opportunity to grow. The waiting list for the class and the numbers that turn out for auditions grow every year.

I certainly look forward to seeing the children around Ronan. It melts my heart when I hear a smiling child’s voice say, “Hi, Miss Cammy.” That’s the best report card I could ever get.
