CHARLO – The day was bright and hot, as hundreds of spectators headed to Main Street in Charlo to celebrate the nation’s birthday and watch the small town’s big annual parade. Youngsters filled their bags with candy thrown by float occupants who passed them by. Children also had the opportunity to check out the Leon 4-H club petting zoo, or get their faces decorated with patriotic flags.
According to parade coordinator Angela Mock, not as many entrants signed up compared to previous years, but the city definitely had more spectators this year. An increase in horse entries this year helped with the low turnout.
“I hope that many people remember the small town community spirit that we all love and take pride in being a part of in future years to come,” Mock said.
“The amount of spectators and fans of the little community was outstanding and far surpassed previous years' attendance,” Mock said.
At dusk, a fireworks show was launched from the baseball fields, lighting the nighttime sky with brilliant hues as the city ended the day of celebration with a bang.
Each year community members compete in various competitions throughout the parade. This year “Best dressed kid and pet” category was added.
The colors were presented by the Montana Honor Guard comprised of Mission Valley Veterans.
