Editor,

Mission Valley Food Pantry has been the recipient of helping hands and generous people throughout the 2010 year. The economic situation of many in our area has not improved within the last 12 months, and this seems to have made the people of our area more aware of the needs of others. Participation in food drives has increased, and small and large donations have kept our volunteer staff able to keep providing food for needy families in our area.

KERR radio employees held a successful food drive that provided an abundance of food.  While we concentrate on providing the basic foods they also contributed a wide variety.

St. Ignatius High School, St. Ignatius Middle School, St. Ignatius Honor Society all conducted food drives that netted several thousand pounds of food. Many of these students started their collection at home, an area already asked to contribute to many other causes. Once again the families of these students were willing to share with their neighbors. And the students were willing to collect, and deliver the food to the pantry door.

Blackfoot Telephone Company and Salish and Kootenai Tribes have continued giving cash donations. The Tribes shared fish, all cleaned, cut and bagged from the Mack Days Project.

Support comes in large and small ways. It all helps and is much appreciated. The local food stores have been generous with donations and discounts throughout the year. The churches in our area have been very supportive. Many individual donors have contributed garden produce, foodstuffs, and money. Our neighbor Don Bohne has mowed the lawn at the pantry and now that winter has set in, he has been plowing the snow. His property closely aligns our building but he allows our customers to park in his driveway while they receive their food.

At this holiday time we want to express our thanks to all the churches, businesses, schools, and individuals for their support. It is all this unselfish help that allows pantry director Heidi Riddle and the all-volunteer staff to stay true to our mission, to alleviate hunger here in our valley.

Sincerely,

Grace Slack
Mission Valley Food Pantry Secretary
