Editor,

My name is Walter Schock, and I am seeking re-election for water commissioner from the Mission irrigation district.

Presently I am serving as a water commissioner from the Mission Water District, a position I’ve held for the past 27 years. I am currently the chairman of the Flathead Joint Board of Control, a position I’ve held for 24 years. I initiated the discussion between tribal leaders and the Joint Board to facilitate the transfer of the management of the irrigation district to the irrigators. Three years ago, this transfer was completed.

As you know, I support the water compact. I made it quite clear that I would not support the water compact unless we would be able to get sufficient water to meet the irrigators needs. In our last two days of negotiations in January of 20l3, we were able to secure additional water to meet the irrigators’ needs. Without a compact, I am concerned that there may not be adequate water available; there may not be adequate funds for rehab; and it’ll be costly to litigate the water rights.

I have lived in the Mission Valley since 1955. My son and I run a Grade A dairy farm. Prior to moving here I worked for an irrigation project in Eastern Montana.

I have a long history of community service. I was a member of the fair board for 30 years and served as their president for approximately 20 years. I have been on the school board when the

Mission, Ronan and Charlo schools were one district. I have served as president and council member and also treasurer of my church. Currently, I am the chairman of the tax appeal board.

I would like to continue as your water commissioner from the Mission District. I have dedicated 27 years to my duties as a commissioner, and I believe my commitment and experience are needed to promote and protect the water interests of the Flathead Irrigation users. I would appreciate your vote on the upcoming election. If you have questions on water issues, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for your support.
