Even if you have a beautiful dress and Grandma’s heirloom lace veil, a hall rented for the reception and a groom in a tuxedo, you need to take care of getting a marriage license before the wedding ceremony.
In Montana, both the bride and groom need to go to the county courthouse to get a marriage license application.
In Polson, the Lake County Courthouse is located at 106 Fourth Avenue E, and marriage license applications are available on the third floor from the Clerk of District Court’s office.
Both the bride and groom need to bring a picture ID, such as a driver’s license, which shows their name and birth date.
A marriage license lasts for 180 days, so the couple should plan their marriage ceremony within that six-month time frame. The Clerk of District Court will charge $53, cash or money order, to issue a marriage license. No waiting period is required before the couple may marry.
In the state of Montana, anyone can marry you. The presiding person, whether he or she is a judge, a minister, a mayor or a tribal judge, must sign the marriage license and return it to the Clerk of District Court.
“We send their original license back to them,” Clerk of District Court Lyn Fricker said.
