Polson pulls away from Ronan in rivalry games

The Pirates opened 2011 with a pair of wins this week as they downed rival Ronan Friday evening before winning on the road at Glacier Saturday, 60-55.
It was standing room only in Polson Friday evening as the Pirates and Chiefs opened district play with the first of their two regular-season matchups. Ronan was able to jump out to a quick 8-4 lead but the Pirates were able to quickly come back to take a 9-8 advantage on a three by Zach Camel with 2:21 to play in the opening frame.
Polson used a late run to add to its lead in the quarter, a run that was capped off by an offensive rebound and put back by Louis Mohr that gave the Pirates a 17-10 lead after eight minutes of play.
Ronan cut into the lead with a 6-0 run in the early moments of the second quarter before Kyle Bagnell answered with a three to put Polson up 23-16.
The Pirates were able to tack on a little more to their lead before the half as Polson led 37-27 at the break.
It was all Polson in the third quarter as the Pirates used a 25-13 run to build a 62-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Ronan was able to use its defense to help cut into the Polson lead in the fourth quarter as the Chiefs outscored the Pirates 21-12 over the final eight minutes. It was not enough, though, as Polson held on to pick up a 74-61 victory.
Mohr led the way for Polson in the win with 28 points, 13 rebounds and five assists while Sheldon Fisher added 12 points and four steals. Kyle Bagnell also scored in double figures with 11 and added six rebounds.
The Pirates again withstood a strong fourth-quarter push to pick up a win on the road at Glacier Saturday as Polson downed the Wolfpack, 60-55.
Polson was able to build a 45-35 lead after three quarters of play but had to hold on in the final eight minutes to get the win.
Mohr hit five three-point baskets as he led the Pirates with 20 points while Bagnell added another pair of threes and had 15 points.
The Lady Pirates were also pick up a win over Ronan at home Friday to open conference play but came up short against Glacier on the road Saturday.
Ronan jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead at Polson Friday before the Lady Pirates took control of the game. It was Riley Kenney who helped Polson establish control early as she hit her first eight shots of the contest before finishing with 21 points. Polson was able to build a 21-10 lead after one quarter of play but Ronan was able to keep pace in the second quarter and the Lady Pirates led 36-22 at halftime.
The second half belonged to the Polson duo of Breanne Kelley and Jonna Grant as both finished with 12 points.
Polson outscored Ronan 33-22 in the second half to pick up the win.
Kenney’s 21 points and 13 rebounds led Polson while Kelley added 12 points and seven rebounds and Grant had 12 points and three boards.
A fourth-quarter run by Glacier was too much for Polson to overcome Saturday as they Lady Pirates fell on the road, 44-36.
Glacier was able to build a narrow 20-17 lead at the half and continued to lead by three headed into the fourth quarter. Glacier was able to put together a 16-11 run over the final eight minutes as Polson came up just short.
Kelley led the way for Polson in the loss with 16 points while Kenney added nine and Grant had six points.
Both the Pirates and Lady Pirates will continue play Thursday as the boys play on the road at Eureka while the girls play at home. Both teams will be on the road Saturday at Libby.
