Hundreds descend on Ronan for annual Western Montana Duals

RONAN - The Ronan Event Center was full to capacity for two days this weekend as the Chiefs hosted the annual Western Montana Duals.
With 18 teams from around the western half of the state competing for the top prize, the gym was a flurry of activity with as many as six matches going at a time.
In the end, it was Corvallis that came away with the championship as the Blue Devils downed Polson in the final dual. Columbia Falls earned third with a win over Ronan in their final dual of the tournament while Frenchtown was fifth and Glacier came in sixth.
The Pirates made a strong showing at the Western Montana Duals over the weekend, winning five of their six matchups to earn the second-place trophy at the event.
Jessie Alfiero, who wrestled in the 125-pound division for the Pirates, led the way for Polson with four pins and a win by decision as he won five of his six matchups. Craig Feistner picked up four pins for the Pirates during the tournament while Drew Fouty, Jake Young, Alex Nystrom, Mike Devlin and Josiah Clairmont pinned three each.
The Pirates opened the tournament with a convincing 78-12 win over Arlee in the opening round Friday, winning 13 of 15 weight classes. Clairmont had the fastest win of the round, pinning Arlee’s Cody North in 15 seconds while Alfiero pinned Donovan McDonald in 29 seconds.
Polson picked up another blowout win in round two, downing Corvallis 78-10. Again, it was Clairmont leading the way with a 10-second pin of Dusty Jessop while Jake Skelton pinned Rylee Burt in 11 seconds. Feistner also picked up a pin in under a minute, winning over Tucker Jessop in just 36 seconds.
The Pirates made it look easy once again in their final dual of the day Friday as they downed Hamilton, 66-15. Nystrom had the fastest pin of the round for the Pirates, taking down Donald Thomas in 44 seconds while Mike Devlin also won in under a minute, pinning Brady Morey in 56 seconds.
Polson’s winning streak continued in the Pirates’ opening matchup Saturday as Polson downed Glacier, 48-27. This time it was Fouty getting the fastest pin for the Pirates, winning over Stanley Ortel in 57 seconds.
It was a rivalry rematch in round seven as Polson picked up a 55-30 win over host Ronan. Polson won 10 of the 15 weight classes against the Chiefs to pick up the win as Young led the way with a pin of Shelby Grant in 1:14.
The Pirates found themselves overmatched in the championship of the tournament, falling to Corvallis, 55-30. Carlos Quinones, Dylan Moll, Feistner and Clairmont all picked up pins, but those were the only four wins Polson had in the matchup.
Polson’s season continues this weekend as the Pirates wrestle at the Rocky Mountain Classic in Missoula.

Four Chiefs went undefeated over the weekend as Ronan finished fourth at the Western Montana Duals.
Andrew Tiegan pinned all five of his opponents during the two-day tournament while Toby Cheff pinned picked up five wins by pin and a forfeit. Colby Roberts pinned three, won one by decision and picked up two forfeits while Dustin Goldsby won three by pin and another by major decision for the Chiefs.
Ronan opened the tournament with a lopsided 55-12 win over Hamilton Friday afternoon. Ronan won every matchup of the round as Hamilton picked up all 12 points via forfeits. Shelby Grant had the quickest pin on the round for the Chiefs, picking up a win over Donald Thomas is just 34 seconds.
The Chiefs picked up another lopsided win in the second round Friday as they downed Drummond, 54-9. Ronan won all but two matches in the round as Brandon Dumont picked up the quickest pin with a 49-second win over Peyden Prince.
The Chiefs kept things rolling Saturday morning as they opened day two of the tournament with a 52-10 win over Arlee. Ronan went 9-2 in the matchup as Tiegan, Quentin Denton, Cole McArthur, Cheff and Roberts all picked up pins.
Ronan found itself in a much closer matchup in round six as the Chiefs pulled out a 45-33 win over the Broncs of Frenchtown.
Roberts had the fastest pin of the round for the Chiefs, taking down Anson Weathers in 1:11 while Tiegan, Grant, Goldsby, Denton, McArthur and Cheff also had pins against the Broncs.
The Chiefs winning streak came to an end in the seventh round of the tournament as Ronan fell to rival Polson, 55-30.
Tiegan, Goldsby, McArthur, Cheff and Roberts all picked up pins for Ronan but it was not enough to give the Chiefs the victory.
Ronan came up short again in the third-place dual, once again falling to a conference foe in Columbia Falls. Grant, McArthur and Cheff all picked up pins for the Chiefs but Columbia Falls picked up a 54-25 victory.
Ronan’s season continues Thursday as the Chiefs host Libby before traveling to Missoula for the Rocky Mountain Classic over the weekend.

The Arlee Warriors picked up some valuable experience against larger schools over the weekend as they went 4-2 at the Western Montana Duals.
Cole Rice led the Warriors in the tournament, going 5-1 with three pins and two wins by major decision. Austin Rubel, Leif Rova and Clayton Trimble each went 3-3 for Arlee during the tournament.
The Warriors had a tough matchup in the opening round Friday afternoon as they fell to the eventual second-place team, Polson, 78-12. Arlee’s only points of the dual came from Rice’s pin of Mike Devlin and Albert Plant’s win via forfeit.
The Warriors followed up the loss with a strong showing against the Corvallis second squad, picking up a 44-30 win.
Arlee lost only one matchup that was not a forfeit against Corvallis as Cameron Dominick, Rova, Plant, Trimble and Cody North all picked up pins. Rubel and Rice both won their matches by major decision.
The Warriors fell in their third dual of the tournament as they took on Class A Frenchtown. Rubel, Trimble and Curt Seidel picked up the only wins of the round for Arlee (all via pin) as Frenchtown downed the Warriors, 55-24.
Arlee came up short against another Class A opponent in the fifth round of the tournament as the Warriors fell to host Ronan, 52-10. Arlee’s only points of the round came from a major decision win by Rice against Shelby Grant and a forfeit win by Trimble.
It was another Class A team that defeated Arlee in the seventh round of the tournament Saturday afternoon as the Warriors fell to Hamilton, 41-24. Rice and Rubel picked up pins in their matchups while Plant and North won by forfeit.
The Warriors bounced back with a big win in their final dual of the tournament as they defeated Class AA Flathead, 39-30.
Rubel, Rice, Rova and Trimble all won by pin in their matchups while North picked up a 10-3 decision over Axel Baldholm.
The Warriors will continue their season this weekend as they wrestle at the Choteau tournament.

Facing larger schools didn’t seem to be a problem for the Mission-Charlo wrestling team over the weekend as they went 4-1 at the Western Montana Duals.
Colton Toren led Mission-Charlo with an outstanding showing at the two-day event, going 5-0 with pins in all five matchups. Jessen Petersen was also undefeated for Mission-Charlo as he picked up two pins, a win by major decision, one by decision and a forfeit.
The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a 39-36 victory over Class A Libby Friday afternoon. Casey Nitschke had the fastest pin of the dual for Mission-Charlo, defeating Aaron Seefeldt in 1:03. Toren, Petersen and Jole Lewis also had pins for Mission-Charlo against Libby.
The Bulldogs’ only loss of the tournament came in the second round Friday as Mission-Charlo fell to Florence, 48-22.
Toren pinned Logan Beskoon in their matchup while Peterson downed Zach Newbary by major decision, 11-2.
The Bulldogs got back to their winning ways in round four as they took down Deer Lodge, 51-18.
Mission-Charlo went 9-3 in the dual as Dylan Edwards, Nitschke, Scotty Gilleard and Toren all picked up wins by pin.
The Bulldogs opened competition Saturday with a win as they defeated Plains in the fifth round of the tournament, 51-30. Toren pinned Giorgi Malakmadze in 1:14 to lead Mission-Charlo in the round while Chad Anderson pinned Ben Gorham in 5:44 and Pete Dumont pinned Dylan Francesconi in 3:09.
The Bulldogs closed the tournament with another win as they defeated the Corvallis junior varsity squad, 46-36. Petersen had the fastest pin of the dual for Mission-Charlo, defeating David Daffin in 27 seconds while Nitschke, Toren, Barret Sargent and Chad Anderson also had pins for Mission-Charlo in the dual.
The Bulldogs will be at Plains Tuesday before competing in the Choteau tournament over the weekend.
