LIBBY - The Lady Bulldogs will be headed to the divisional tournament after earning second place at the District 7B tournament over the weekend.
Mission, which had a bye in the opening round, opened the tournament with a 41-32 win over Plains Friday before falling to Bigfork in the district championship game, 53-19.
The first quarter was the difference against Plains Friday as the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-5 lead after eight minutes of action. Mission added three more to its lead in the second frame, outscoring the Trotters 17-14 to grab a 28-19 halftime advantage.
The second half was a low-scoring affair as both sides scored 13.
Kyla Mitchell led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points in the win while Stephanie Lewandowski added eight.
Mission once again found itself overpowered by the Valkyries in the title game as the Lady Bulldogs fell to third-ranked Bigfork for the third time this season on Saturday.
Breanna Steele led Mission in the loss with seven points while Kyla Mitchell and LaGlenn Mitchell each added four.
The Bulldogs saw their season end at the district tournament this weekend as they fell to Troy and Plains.
“We had a very good season, going 10-10,” head coach Lloyd Phillips said. “We beat some very good teams along the way, including Troy, the district champion.”
The Bulldogs opened the tournament facing a tough task as they fell to eventual champion Troy, 45-32.
Troy jumped out to a 10-5 lead after one quarter of play and led 19-15 at halftime. Mission used a 6-3 run to cut the Troy lead to 22-21 in the third quarter but it was as close as the Bulldogs would come.
Stuart Grant led the Bulldogs in the loss with 10 points and four rebounds while Austin Durglo added nine points and six boards.
The Bulldogs found themselves in a tough fight Saturday as they fell to Plains in an elimination game, 45-43.
Mission grabbed a 10-5 lead after the opening quarter but Plains rallied to cut the Bulldog lead to 18-15 at the half.
Plains continued to trail, 31-29 heading into the final eight minutes, where the Trotters outscored Mission 16-12 to get the win.
Dylan Evans led the Bulldogs with 13 points in the loss while Grant added 11 points and seven rebounds.
While the season may be over for the Bulldogs, Phillips says the future looks bright.
“We will return all five starters next year and three more that played in the tournament for us,” he said. “They will all be a year older and, hopefully, taller.”
