BUTTE - The young Chief wrestling squad picked up some valuable experience at the Mining City Duals this weekend, going 2-3 against some tough competition.
Once again, the squad faced a tough task at the duals as they went into all of their matches behind in points because of several open weight classes. The team went into the tournament knowing that it was not going to be easy.
“We wrestled okay. Our goal was to go out and pin and not give up any pins,” coach Dustyn Azure said. “We need to get as many bonus points as possible to get wins in our duals, especially with all of the open weight classes we have.”
The Chiefs opened the tournament with a couple of sluggish outings Friday morning after leaving Ronan at 4 a.m. to make it to Butte.
“As a team, we were pretty disappointed in ourselves the way we competed on Friday in our first two duals,” Azure said. “We competed a lot better against Helena High in our third dual, but we were still sleeping during our first two duals. There was no movement at all.”
The Chiefs fell in their first two duals of the tournament, losing to Great Falls 63-16 and Sidney 51-24. Ronan bounced back with a stronger outing against Helena in the third dual of the day, but still fell 57-30.
Ronan was able to pick things up on the second day of competition as the Chiefs picked up a pair of wins over Dillon and Huntley Project.
“We went out there attacking. We were pinning kids. We were moving a lot better against Helena and that continued on into Saturday,” Azure said. “Against Dillon, we knew we had to pin and we ended up pinning five of them. We just competed a lot better Saturday. We were ready to go and we looked like a totally different team.”
Ronan was able to squeak by Dillon to get the win, 37-36 before ending the tournament with a 53-18 victory over Huntley Project.
Cole McArthur and Toby Cheff led the way for the Chiefs as McArthur won all five of his matches, including winning four by pin, and Cheff won all four of his matchups, three by pin and one by tech fall. Shelby Grant, Colby Roberts, Brandon Dumont, Andrew Tiegan, Quentin Denton and Dustin Goldsby all had pins for the Chiefs during the tournament as well.
According to Azure, his young wrestlers just needed to settle down before they could do their best.
“I think a lot of the young kids were in awe of how big the tournament was on that first day. The competition is a lot tougher than it was for them in junior high,” he said. “They were able to bounce back from that after the first day. We need to make sure we are confident when we go out there. The kids need to learn to believe in themselves. I think that is what we gained this weekend. We got a lot of experience and gained a lot of confidence. The younger kids learned that they can compete at this level.”
The Chiefs were also in action at home Thursday as they fell to Polson in a close dual, 39-37. In a matchup that came down to the final pair of wrestlers, the Chiefs came up just short.
Ronan will continue its season this week as the Chiefs wrestle at the Holiday Classic in Great Falls Friday and Saturday.
