Pirates finish 2-4 at Mining City Duals over weekend, down Ronan Thursday

BUTTE - The Pirates saw some tough competition over the weekend as they battled several larger schools at the Mining City Duals.
Polson was able to come away with a 2-4 finish despite having to forfeit several weight classes in many of the matchups.
“We won our first tw, but we got beat up a little by Sky View in the night match Friday. They are one of the better AA teams though,” coach Bob Owen said. “We wrestled mostly AA schools, but that is good for us. It gives you a real idea of where you are at. I don’t mind us having to do that at all.”
Josiah Clairmont led the way for the Pirates in the tournament, picking up pins in all six of his matchups. Carlos Quinones also had a strong weekend, going 4-2 with three pins.
“I would rate us, if I were giving us a grade, I would give us a B+ for the tournament,” Owen said. “We were giving up a lot of weight classes to forfeit. If it weren’t for those, we were pretty darn competitive. We were winning a whole lot more matches than we were losing.”
Polson opened the competition with a 43-42 win over CMR and followed that with a 60-30 win over Hardin later in the day. The Pirates finished out the day with a 64-18 loss to Big Sky.
Things only got tougher for the Pirates Saturday as two more wresters were absent as they left to take the ACT test.
“Being down two more wrestlers meant we were open at four weight classes. So, we knew we didn’t have much of a chance to win our duals Saturday morning,” Owen said. “We competed pretty well against Corvallis and Havre, though.”
Polson fell to Corvallis 51-36, lost to Havre 66-18 and was defeated by Billings Senior 54-27.
Polson picked up a win Thursday as they defeated the Chiefs in Ronan, 39-37, but the match was short-lived as several of the weight classes were won by forfeit.
“I think it’s a shame for both of us that we had to forfeit that many weight classes. That doesn’t make for a great dual match when that happens,” Owen said. “The next time we meet, we will both have several more wrestlers. So, it should be a lot more exciting for the fans next time we get together.”
Polson’s season continues Friday and Saturday at the Tri-State meet in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho.
