POLSON — Soup’s On set up a depression-era soup kitchen at Page by Page Books during downtown Polson’s Historic Living Windows on Dec. 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. Sandy Farrell and her crew from Soup’s On dressed in period clothing and served soup from an authentic cookstove. Outside Pat West, Eric Donovan, his dog Charlie, and other friends “begged.”
The whole operation was a fundraiser for Soup’s On, and a tasty one at that. For a donation shoppers and strollers could get a warm bowl of homemade chili or potato soup, homemade bread and hot cider or coffee.
Some of the bread was made by Farrell under the tutelage of Maureen Theiler, local good breadmaker and cook. Theiler brought her recipe and knowledge into the Wander Inn at 10 a.m. on Dec. 10, and the two women prepared rolls using one of Theiler’s friend’s recipes. Farrell used whole wheat flour while Theiler stuck with white flour.
Soup’s On serves free lunches of soup, bread and dessert at the Wander Inn, 101 7th Ave. West. Food is available from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
The program has been in operation for a year now, run entirely by volunteers. After a remodel, the kitchen is larger and easier to cook in, but the operation still needs help even with the $310 raised at the depression soup kitchen. Donations plus this money will keep the soup coming for a month or two according to Pat West who also volunteers at Soup’s On.
Soup’s On has a wish list, Farrell said, with the top three items being an upgraded electrical system, a six-burner stove and more volunteers. Cash, of course, is always welcome, too.
