COEUR d’ALENE- Polson’s wrestlers saw a lot of action this week as the team had duals against Columbia Falls and Whitefish Tuesday before splitting up to compete in the Tri-State Tournament in Coeur d’Alene and the Buzz Lucey Memorial Tournament in Eureka over the weekend.

Eight Pirate wrestlers gained valuable experience against stiff competition at the Tri-State Meet in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho over the weekend as Polson went up against wrestlers from several states and 56 other teams at the meet.

“It’s really a tough tournament. It’s incredibly tough,” Polson coach Bob Owen said. “Everyone knows how tough it is, though. It is probably the toughest tournament in the Northwest.”

The Pirates ended the tournament with a 5-16 record, earned 14 points and finished 46th as a team. According to Owen, this tournament is not all about getting wins, though.

“It is a great opportunity for our kids to see where they are at in relationship to the elite wrestlers in the Northwest,” he said. “There is no other tournament out there where we would get to face this kind of competition.”

Pirate wrestler Jacob Young has the best tournament for Polson, going 2-2 and finishing just two wins shy of placing. Young opened the tournament with an 11-4 win over Mitchell Becook of Spokane’s North Central High School. Young came up short in his second match, falling via a 7-2 decision to Herson Rodriguez of Mossy Lake. Young followed up with an 8-5 win over Fabian Scotto of Hermeston, Oregon but was eliminated from the tournament with a 5-0 loss to Kenney Staud of Coeur d’Alene.

Mike Devlin, Josiah Clairmont and Drew Fouty also each picked up one win at the tournament for the Pirates.

Fouty won his opening match by pinning Patrick Shire of Auburn, Washington in 1:14. Devlin won his second match of the tournament with a 9-4 decision over Clayton Paul of Spokane’s Ferris High School and Clairmont won his second match with a 14-13 decision against Dan Shoutz on Spokane’s Central Valley High School.

While those pirates were in action in Idaho, the rest of the Polson squad was competing in the Buzz Lucey Memorial Tournament in Eureka Saturday. The Pirates took the top prize in two weight classes at the tournament as Polson finished fifth as a team.

Polson took the top three places in the 105-pound division as Dylan Moll won first, Lucas Polk came in second and Taylor Martin earned third. Colton Lenz also earned a top place, winning the 145-pound weight class. Alex Nystrom was second in the 135-pound division, Nick Grogan was third in the 140-pound division and Marlin Burke earned fourth in the 189-pound weight class.

The Pirates were also in action Tuesday as they hosted Columbia Falls and Whitefish. Open weight classes leading to forfeits cost the Pirates against Columbia Falls as Polson fell 43-33.

The Pirates bounced back with a dominating performance against Whitefish in the late duel of the evening. Polson needed just 3:18 to pick up six of its pins en route to a 78-9 blowout. Polk, Moll, Craig Feistner, Jose Quinones and Grogan all pinned their opponents in under a minute in their matches, including a 12-second pin by Polk.

The Pirates season continues Jan. 6 when Polson host Libby.
