MISSOULA — The Charlo track and field team had a strong showing at the Jim Johnson invitation at the University of Montana last weekend, with the Vikings placing second as a team and the Lady Vikings taking third. Both the boys and girls 400-meter relay teams won their races, and Charlo athletes turned in several solid individual performances, too.
“(It was a) good first meet of the year,” head coach Bret Thompson said. “Coaches are really happy with the effort from the younger athletes.”
The Charlo boys (Jacen Petersen, Kail Pope, Tra Ludeman and Tyler Delaney) won the 400-meter relay in 45.42 and the team of Delaney, Pope, Connor Daugherty and Tristan took third in the 1,600 relay in 3:47.78.
Ludeman was second in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.68 and took third place in the 100-meter with a time of 11.78. Tyler Delaney won the 400 in 53.32. In the 800-meter run, Daugherty came in fourth (2:17.54), closely followed by teammate Kobe Cox, who finished in 2:18.09. Dalton Delaney was fifth in the 3,200, finishing in 12:04.46.
Kail Pope turned in a strong hurdling performance, taking fourth in both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles with respective times of 17.35 and 43.57.
The only Vikings to place in field events were Webb O’Neill and \ Petersen, who tied with Deer Lodge’s Taryn Witt for second in the pole vault, all three athletes clearing 12-0.
Charlo’s girls scored 49 to come in third behind Seeley-Swan with 76 points and Superior with 63.
Sienna Brown took second in the 200-meter in 29.21, and Mackenzie Foust was fifth in the 3,200, finishing in 14:27.28
In the 100 hurdles, Aspen Runkel came in second in 17.09 4, and teammate Rachel Hoyt finished fourth in 17.73. Hoyt also took fifth in the 300 hurdles (51.71).
The Lady Viking team of Brown, Madison Foust, Runkel and Michaela Krahn won the 400 relay in 53.67, and Jordan Ludeman, Madison Foust Runkel and Hoyt came in second in the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 4:34.28.
Krahn was sixth in discus with a 88-foot-3-inch toss, and Foust hurled the javelin 90 feet, 7 inches for second place. Shayna Nagy tied with Arlee’s Darian Charlo for sixth in the triple jump, both athletes leaping 28 feet, 9 inches. In the pole vault, Jordan Ludeman was second in a three-way tie with Adair Dunham of Drummond and Superior’s Kinzie Cooper; all three girls cleared 7-6.
