ARLEE — On a frosty December morning, Arlee business owners and community members got a cheery holiday treat: a visit from 20-odd Arlee Elementary carolers, bundled up and singing their hearts out.
Directed by local choir fixture Anne Stewart, the students walked from the school to downtown and popped in all the businesses to sing Christmas favorites like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Oh Christmas Tree,” always ending with a rousing rendition of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” To the children’s delight, their demand of “Bring us a figgy pudding” was almost always met with treats they stuffed in their pockets for later.
“This is our biggest turnout for the Friday activities, and the community really likes (the caroling),” said teacher Dori Knoll.
The school started holding Friday morning activities for elementary students after switching to a four-day school week for the 2009-10 academic year. “Friday Free Three” meets every other Friday and includes activities from crafts and plays to special events with guest performers. But the Christmas caroling day is a favorite with kids, Knoll said.
Activities planned for January include a craft day and a new type of “show-and-tell” — students and parents will get details when school resumes.
