Once again, the Eagles played a pair of close games this week but could not pull out a win as they fell to Arlee and second-ranked Charlo.

The Eagles saw a third-quarter lead disappear Saturday as they fell at Arlee, 69-60.

Arlee led by as many as six in the opening quarter but the Eagles closed the gap to 13-12 at the end of the frame on a steal and layup by Artie Mendoza. The Warriors pushed their lead as high as eight with two minutes to go in the opening half but the Eagles answered with seven straight points over the next minute to cut the Arlee lead to 29-28. A pair of baskets in the half’s closing moments left the Eagles down 33-28 at the break.

The Eagles came out firing in the second half, using several three-point baskets to cut into the Arlee lead. T.J. Cutfinger gave the Eagles their first lead of the contest with a turn-around jumper in the lane with 6:01 to play in the third quarter. Arlee quickly tied the game with a free throw but Mendoza gave the Eagles back the lead with a three from the left corner moments later. Another three gave the Eagles their largest lead of the game at 45-39 midway through the third period.

Arlee was able to erase the Eagle lead before the end of the frame, tying the contest at 45 with 1:19 left in the third. Arlee regained the lead with a layup with 57 seconds to play in the third and the Warriors never trailed again. The Eagles were able to cut the lead down to two in the fourth but could not regain the lead as the Warriors held on to get the win.

Clayton Malatare led the Eagles with 14 points in the loss while Cutfinger and Mendoza each scored 13 and Marcus Brown added 10.

The Eagles saw another game slip away at home Thursday as they fell to No. 2 Charlo, 63-53.

Charlo led 21-17 after one quarter of play but the Eagles used a 13-8 run in the second frame to grab a 30-29 halftime lead. The third quarter was the difference as Charlo outscored the Eagles 18-10 to go up 47-40 heading into the final eight minutes. The Vikings outscored the Eagles 16-13 in the final frame to earn the win.

Brown led the Eagles with 16 points in the loss while Cutfinger and Malatare each added 11.

The season continues for the Eagles Thursday as they play at St. Regis before hosting Lincoln Friday.
