The Chiefs picked up another split this week as they fell at Whitefish Thursday before bouncing back with a win against Superior Saturday.
Ronan had no answer for the height of Whitefish down the stretch Thursday as Bulldog forward Drew Galbraith poured in 21 points and grabbed 14 points as the Chiefs fell, 55-42.
Pesky defense and three-point shooting helped the Chiefs keep the game close in the opening half. All three of Ronan’s first-quarter field goals came from long distance in the opening quarter as the teams fought to an 11-all tie. Defense led to offense in the second quarter for the Chiefs as Ronan’s full-court press led to several easy layup opportunities off of Bulldog turnovers. Ronan used those layups to help build a 23-20 halftime lead.
The second half belonged to the home team, though, as the height of the Bulldogs began taking its toll on the undersized Chiefs. Inside baskets and second-chance opportunities helped Whitefish come back to build a 38-31 lead after three quarters before the Bulldogs outscored Ronan 17-11 in the fourth to pull away for the win.
Marcus Hungerford led the Chief effort with 11 points while Justin Dustybull had eight and Kevin Wroblewski added seven.
The Chiefs bounced back with a one-sided win over visiting Superior in Ronan Saturday. Every player on the Ronan roster scored in the contest as the Chiefs used a true team effort to earn a 79-37 victory.
The Bobcats kept the game close in the opening quarter as Ronan led 21-17 after eight minutes of play but Superior seemed to fade during the final three quarters of play.
The Chiefs used a 21-12 second-quarter run to build a 42-29 halftime lead before outscoring the Bobcats 37-8 in the second half to pull away for the lopsided win.
Four Chiefs finished the game in double figures as Lucas Black led the way with 11 points while J.J. Tanner, Dustybull and Wroblewski each added 10 points in the win.
With the win, the Chiefs improve to 6-7 this season.
The Maidens saw a golden opportunity to pick up their first win of the season slip away Thursday as they took on previously winless Whitefish.
The game was knotted at seven after one quarter of play before Whitefish outscored the Maidens 8-4 in the second frame to grab a 15-11 halftime advantage.
The Maidens made a strong charge in the third period, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 12-8 to tie the game at 23 heading into the fourth quarter.
Whitefish was able to pull away in the final minutes of the game to pick up the Lady Bulldogs’ first win of the season, 36-31.
Courtney Clairmont led the Maiden effort with nine points while Ashleigh Lynch added six, Alice VanGunten had four and Justice Burland scored two points.
The Maidens were unable to overcome the pressing defense of Superior Saturday as Ronan fell to the Bobcats, 63-39.
The Bobcats used a full-court press to help build a 33-14 halftime lead before cruising in the second half to get the win.
VanGunten scored 15 to lead the Maidens while Mariah Cheff added 11, Tailyr Irvine scored eight, Trinity Rosenbaum had four points and Clairmont added one.
With the losses, the Maidens fall to 0-13.
The Chiefs and Maidens will be at home this week as they host rival Polson Friday before taking on Libby Saturday.
