“There’s a big star in lights on the side of the hill above Jette Store,” he said to me.
“I know. I put it there,” I responded.
“Wow. It’s really big. I love seeing it, even from Polson. Are you a big Dallas Cowboys fan?” he asked.
“Not really. But long before the five-pointed star was the logo for the Cowboys, it was the Star of Bethlehem, the identifying symbol of the ‘little town’ where Christ was born.
"Our congregation, Good Shepherd Lutheran, has a sister church relationship with the Lutheran church there, and two of our daughters have spent two years each working and teaching music there. Life is in many ways no easier for the faithful of Bethlehem today than it was 2,000 years ago, so we try to help them in as many ways as we can.”
“So it is a message of support as well as a neat Christmas decoration…” he asked.
“Yes it is. We light it throughout the Advent Season and hope that people who see it might think both about the ‘little town’ where Christ was born, and the Christians who still struggle to be faithful there today.”
(Editor’s note: Paul Rowold is the pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Polson.)
