Editor,

“The chickens all eventually come home to roost.” And isn’t this whole situation in Egypt, as far as our country’s great difficulty in coming to coherent terms with it, the perfect example of these homecoming egg layers.

In the name of “peace in the Middle East, fighting terrorism, supporting Israel” and “spreading democracy,” why do we continue propping up dictators, sometimes even putting them in power, and generally supporting them and their oppressive regimes?

All four of these objectives fly in the face of our great rhetoric about “human rights, democracy, freedom of speech, eliminating world hunger,” and the myriad of worthwhile causes our leaders continually talk about.

The Egyptian uprising is a perfect example of the sort of dilemma we bring upon ourselves when saying one thing but acting in a different way.

The Egyptian people are demonstrating for “human rights, democratic principles, freedom of speech, eliminating hunger” and the myriad of needs not being met by an oppressive regime.

The fact is that peace in the Middle East is only going to happen if the general populations in the Middle East begin to feel and experience freedom of speech, much better living conditions, and a rule of law based upon human rights.

The fact is that Israel’s policies are all for Israel, and they are not interested in much else.

The fact is that spreading democracy is only going to see results if the masses of people begin to experience and feel it at the grass roots level of life.

The fact is that eliminating terrorism starts with the masses of people beginning to experience individual freedoms, better living conditions, jobs, proper education, and the myriad of opportunities for a better life.

Our governmental policies, over the years, have favored the power of individual leaders over the will of the people.

The chickens realize this and eventually come home to roost where they can be seen and heard.
