Editor,

The earthquake in Japan and the events in Wisconsin last week show a stark contrast between people whose culture emphasizes respect for one another, and ours which emphasizes a culture of entitlement. Even with all the devastation in Japan, looting is unheard of, while in Madison, Wis., the protestors have done perhaps millions of dollars in damage to the capitol grounds and building, and have even made death threats to those who would stand up to the “union bullies.”

Locally, our Mission General Store was robbed recently. This is despicable behavior and should not be tolerated in our community. Truth be known, if they were truly in need, the criminal(s) who did it have numerous community outreach programs available to give them a helping hand. My guess is there was no need involved, it was more greed, disrespect for the property of others, and the culture of entitlement that contributed to their criminal acts.

As our economy continues to worsen, yes worsen, and our national debt becomes more and more unsustainable, civil unrest will grow. As citizens, we must decide now what behavior will be tolerated, and what will not. Will we be a people respectful of the property and lives of our neighbors, or will we allow the bullies to destroy our property, steal from our homes and businesses, or even worse, harm innocent people? Will you stand with the bullies, or against them?

Prepare yourself for the very difficult times and decisions that lie ahead. The time has come for citizens to step out of the sidelines and join together against the lawlessness that is fed by our culture of entitlement.
