BUTTE – A pair of Charlo football stars helped the Red team prevail during the 28th annual Bob Cleverley All-Star eight-man football game. The game was held at the Alumni Coliseum in Butte where its been played for the past 22 straight years.
Chico Stipe and Austin Bauer were all the difference Saturday as Stipe hooked up with Bauer for nine yards, then Bauer tossed the ball to Drummond athlete Bryan Mannix, who took the ball the distance with 16 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Red team a 32-24 lead.
Stipe’s 43 yards passing and 52 yards of rushing, along with one rushing and two passing touchdowns earned him the offensive MVP for the Red team. Anthony Degel of Twin Bridges took home the Red’s top defensive award.
No time was wasted as the stars got to work early. During the first play from scrimmage, the Blue team scored a 53-yard touchdown. The lead didn’t last long though, as Tyler DiGiovanna of Twin Bridges returned the following kickoff for 80 yards to set the tone of the game.
The second quarter was just as exciting. Drummond’s Nate Bignell caught a 43-yard touchdown from Alex Doerschel, with Brady Berntson of the Blue team returning the favor with a 3-yard run before Stipe and Bauer had their tremendous hook-and-ladder play to end the half. All three touchdowns happened in the final 2 minutes and 26 seconds of the quarter.
The Blue team rallied in the fourth to put up 12 points, but it was too little too late for them as the Red team held on to win big, 44-36.
“It feels good to go out with a “W,” Stipe said. “There were players there that I’ve butted heads with for awhile, but everyone got along and it was a fun experience.”
Stipe will be walking on to play football in the fall for the University of Montana where he plans to major in communications.
For the Blue team, Tyler Molyneaux, who led Chinook to the 2010 Class C state title, received the offensive MVP after he ran for 109 yards on 20 carries. Shaide Seimer of Wibaux was awarded defensive MVP.
“This past week was the best football week I’ve ever had,” Stipe said. “They really treated us like royalty down there.”
