Editor,

Parents. What were you thinking?

When I drove to work this morning I found two little girls standing on the side of Rocky Point Road by the Stone Quarry subdivision. No cars in sight. I knew Polson Schools and their buses were delayed two hours due to the weather, so I stopped to tell the little girls and try to figure out what to do with them. The older of the two, maybe second or third grade, said another lady had gone to a neighbor’s house to call her mother. The younger little girl, probably first grade, wanted a ride to her home. The older little girl was hesitant to take a ride from a stranger, which is good. The littler one though, was so cold she would have gone with anyone who offered her a ride. Finally another young woman pulled up. She knew the oldest girl’s family and so she was going to give both girls a ride home. My car said it was 10 degrees and the wind was really blowing, so you know the wind chill was below zero. As a former school bus driver and as a mother and grandmother, when it’s this cold out never ever leave your children standing out on the side of the road waiting for the bus. It only takes a few minutes out in temperatures like that for frostbite and hypothermia.
