PABLO – Pablo Elementary hosted family science night on Tuesday. Community members in science related vocations, came and gave demonstrations in their various fields.
Third grade teacher Lorey Jackson and kindergarten teacher Kathy Smith coordinated the event, which was funded through a grant from Town Pump, and Big Sky Science Partnership.
According to Smith, the night itself did not have expenses as all the presenters were volunteering their time.
“Our main goal is to teach science, along with increasing parental involvement in school,” Pablo Elementary principal Frank Ciez said.
“Over 100 people have signed in so far,” Smith said midway through the event.
A few notable guests for the evening included Ronan High School teacher Jesse Gray, team leader for the award winning RHS robotics team, and SKC Tribal Wildlife Program biologist Stephanie Gillin.
“We’ve got some cool stuff going on here,” Ciez said.
Community members brought science models that were geared towards kids.
According to Smith, one of their goals was to teach them about science, but to also have fun at the same time
The event hosted more than 15 displays in attempt to foster an interest in science among families.
Displays included animal furs and stuffed birds, brought by Gillin. SKC student Gary Picard brought a small scale river display, where participants could dam the water and see how sediments build up and settle in rivers.
Smith hopes that the recent success of science night will propel the event into continuing years to come.
“We hope to continue presenting a science night each year,” Smith said, “We want to continually add new science models and activities. It is also a goal of ours to bring more community professionals in to present at each one.”
