HAMILTON – The Polson boys soccer team tied 2-2 with a talented Hamilton Broncs team with five minutes remaining in the game during the Pirate’s opening bout of the season. James Larson took the ball off his chest, as the ball bounced on the ground twice, before Larson struck the ball into the upper right corner of the goal.
Polson soccer head coach Jess Kittle says he’s proud of his team’s performance against a talented Hamilton team.
“Hamilton played a very good game, using some good passing to keep possession of the ball,” Kittle said. “But I liked what I saw from our team, especially since this was the first game of the season.”
He added that his teams have a history of starting slow, before improving over the course of the season.
“This is the first time in my high school coaching career that one of my teams didn’t start the season with a loss,” Kittle added.
Hamilton struck first in the game after Polson had a communication breakdown. A couple of nice passes rewarded the Broncs with an early 1-0 lead.
Just before halftime the Pirates were able to bounce back to tie the game when Peregrine Frissell punted the ball from his own 18-yard line across the field near Hamilton’s goal. As the keeper scrambled to obtain the ball, he headed it too hard, knocking the ball into the Broncs own goal as a result.
During the second half, Hamilton struck once again as Dace Moerkerke scored off a feed at the 56 minute mark.
It was down to the wire, as the Pirates had only five minutes to tie the game up. As the Pirates worked the field to find an opening for a goal, Larson took the ball off his chest and slammed the ball into the goal.
Frissell had 13 keeper saves for the Pirates, while Niall Gallagher-Clancy had 7 for Hamilton. Polson shot the ball 13 times, to Hamilton’s 17.
The Pirate boys soccer team will host Park High School on Saturday, Sept. 10.
