Editor,

People ask me, "Why do you write so many letters to the editor?" Others might say, "You know, Bob, nobody really reads or cares what you or anyone else writes anyway."

My answer is always the same, always quite straightforward, and always the truth: I write because I like to write and express a possible different way of looking at old problems. I try not to attack anyone, but rather just express more of a philosophy of life around issues and things I see happening in our nation and our world.

For example: When you evaluate everything from Michael Vick signing a $100 million contract to play football, to the absurdity of money which will be spent on people running for election and reelection to the office of president of these United States, one has to wonder how crazy and mixed up our value system has become.

So, my type of letter is not designed to solve anything, particularly. The point of my writing is to encourage, or at least point out, a different way of thinking about things, about life, and about what it is going to take to effect real change.

In the example above, it is about rethinking the right use of money. I am not slamming football or Michael Vick. I am not criticizing the people who have the energy, the knowledge, the ability, and the wisdom to lead our nation. I am talking about values. I am suggesting that perhaps, just perhaps, we as a nation of human beings need to reevaluate our thinking about life. Perhaps we need to think about valuing higher priorities as to where to put the billions and trillions of dollars that is obviously available, other than to sports figures, politicians, wars, and the many other things which we could name which offer very little towards creating a world that works.

That's all, really. It brings me pleasure to sit down and express these things. If anyone likes it, fine. If they don't, fine. In this rather mixed up world, writing in this way helps me to focus my mind on things I have learned over the years about working though problems with less anger and resentment. And the only person I can change is myself.
