POLSON — “What two states border the Okefenokee Swamp?”, “ What is the world’s smallest mammal?” and “What is the square root of 7?” were just some of the tough questions the Polson Middle School Academic Bowl team had to answer to bring home the trophy this year.
The hardware provided a good farewell for long-time advisors Carole Baker and Rhonda Hinman, who will not be coaching next year.
Team members Dylan Cooper, Sam Heutmaker, Kylie Koberg, Nichole Lake, Mollie Lemm, Linnea Madsen, Tommy Mercer, Spencer Raymond and Johnny Umphrey competed against teams from Charlo, Mission and Ronan. Competing seventh and eighth grade students met four times, once at each school with the host school providing dinner. At the end of the fourth competition, Polson won with a cumulative total of 2,220 points followed by Charlo with 1,688, Ronan with 1,405 and Mission with 1,362
Students on the winning PMS team, five seventh and five eighth graders, were chosen by teacher recommendation and their reading records.
“They (team members) have to be more than just smart,” Baker said, “they have to be competitive and verbal … team players.”
