LIBBY – The Pirates and Maidens traveled to Libby this past week to compete for a select few spots at next week’s State A tournament in Great Falls. Polson boys finished second with a score of 43, while the Chiefs took fifth with a score of 10. The Polson girls had an impressive showing at the meet, as they secured five of eight possible spots in the state tournament, after finishing first with a score of 74, while the Maidens finished third with a score of 15.

The Polson boys will be sending both Justin Evertz and Will Davey to state as they defeated Miroslav Zvygelskiy and Vadin Zvygelskiy in the doubles championship final, 3-6, 7-6, (7-5,) 6-4. In the consolation final for third place, Connor Ellis and Camp Kenyon of Whitefish defeated Brady Hislop and Ian Laimbeer of Polson 7-5, 7-5.

In the girls’ singles championship, Pirate Kendyall Rochin took down teammate Whitney Zimmerman, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in a showdown of close friends.

“It was a pretty tough deal, they are close friends,” Polson tennis coach Bob Hislop said.

Zimmerman dominated the mid-part of the match, before Rochin fought back to take the victory.

“Kendyall was down 4-1 and turned it up to win,” Hislop said.

In the singles consolation final, Sara Robinson of Polson defeated Gabrielle Stenger of Columbia Falls, 6-7, (3-2), 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action, Lexie Bartkoski and Marissa Getts of Columbia Falls defeated Kenzie Clay and Jordan Quinn of Polson, 6-0, 7-6, (7-3.)

Ronan’s Katelyn Matkovich and Taylor Courville finished fourth in the tournament after Audra Engebretson and Karmen Borchers of Polson defeated them 6-3, 7-6, (10-8.) With the fourth place finish, Matkovich and Courville will represent Ronan at state.

Hislop has high hopes for his team heading into state.

“Our girls have a very good chance at bringing back some sort of trophy,” he said. “Kendyall and Whitney are probably two of the top five players in the state.”
