RONAN — For three former Ronan wrestling stars, a bond that began in middle school carries through to college and has become a tangible force in their combined success.
The tremendous trio includes Montana State University Northern redshirt sophomore Mickey Cheff, redshirt freshman Toby Cheff and junior Cameron Neiss. All three earned All American honors and placing finishes this season at the 56th annual NAIA Wrestling National Championships held March 2 in Des Moines, Iowa.
The three have wrestled together since middle school, pushing each other to be better every single day for more than eight years.
Aided by the trio from Ronan, MSU-Northern’s wrestling squad finished the season in third place in the nation.
Mickey entered the tournament’s 157 pound weight class ranked 14th in the nation. He placed fifth, climbing nine places in the standings.
“It was pretty sweet,” he said, adding that his goal for next year is, “to get on top of the podium and be a national champ. I’ll be there within the next two years.”
Mickey’s younger brother Toby said his third place finish in the 184 pound weight class felt good, especially considering that he was ranked tenth coming into the tournament.
“It was awesome, but it was tough,” Toby said. “Almost every kid I wrestled was an All American, so I faced some pretty tough kids.”
