POLSON – The Ronan/St. Ignatius and Polson track programs faced off against a select few teams on Saturday as Polson hosted the ABC invitational. Polson girls finished third overall with a score of 64, while RSI girls finished fourth with 58. Both teams are looking strong heading into divisionals May 20 and 21, according to Polson coach Bob Gunderson.
“A number of kids had their best marks last weekend and look to be ready for this week’s divisional meet,” Gunderson said.
Lady Pirate Anna DiGiallonardo did well at the meet, finishing third in both the 100 and 200-meter dash. Teammate Breanne Kelley also stood out, taking second in the 100 hurdles and first in the 300 hurdles.
In the 400-meter relay, Polson took third with a time of 52.97, and in the 1,600 relay they also took third with a time of 4:15.76.
The RSI girls ruled field events at the meet, as Adessa Durglo continued her incredible season by sweeping the high, long, and triple jumps. In the high jump, Durglo tied with Molly Brewer, as both cleared 5 feet 2 inches. She also had a nice mark in the triple jump, as she jumped 35 feet 2 inches, and 15 feet 7 inches in the long jump. Teammate Jenny Larsson took second in the javelin, with her best throw going 104 feet.
On the boys’ side of the action, Polson finished third with a final score of 81. RSI didn’t fare as well, finishing in sixth place with a score of 40.
RSI’s Jalen Bell took first in the triple jump, and third in the long jump, while teammate Eric Malmquist finished first in the 400, and fourth in the 200.
Polson also finished second in the 400 relay, with a time of 45.45.
For the Pirates, Travis Hayes crossed the line with a time of 53.53 to secure a second-place finish in the 400. In the pole vault, Zion Lee took first, leaping 12 feet 6 inches, while teammate Brock Bleazard cleared 12 feet to finish second.
Pirate Clark Rubel secured a victory in the shot put, after launching the weighted ball 47 feet 2 inches.
All five Northwest A teams will meet Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21, for the divisional meet at the Pirate Sports Complex in Polson. On Friday, field events begin at 3 p.m. and running events start at 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, field events and running events both begin at noon.
According to Gunderson, Columbia Falls is favored in the boys division and Whitefish in the girls.
“We are looking forward to hosting the divisional track and field meet in Polson,” Gunderson said. “Our girls have won the division the last two years, are the defending state champions, and have an outside chance of doing it again if all goes right. Whitefish is definitely the favorite on paper but still have to do it on the track. Columbia Falls should run away with the boys competition with the other four teams all evenly matched and having a good chance at finishing second.”
