ST IGNATIUS – Even though the week could’ve been better for the Mission-Arlee-Charlo Lady Bulldog softball team, they still clinched a No. 2 seed for divisional play this week in Thompson Falls. Last week the team faced off against Florence, whose 15-1 division record means they take the top seed, and will make things tough for MAC if they face off in the tournament.
Since MAC defeated Loyola twice and also won against Thompson Falls big on Saturday, the team will take the No. 2 seed.
At Florence, the Lady Bulldogs struck first, as they put up a pair of runs in the top of the first to take a temporary lead. The Falcons didn’t let this damper their spirits, as they came out to score four runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead away for the remainder of the game, handing the team a 10-3 loss.
Kyla Olson took her third loss in the circle, falling 12-3, as Courtney Byrne boosted her record to 17-0. Olson also led her team at bat, hitting 2 for 2.
Sara Nerby, Lauren Erickson, Kinley Pope and Sarena Camacho all finished the day with one hit each for the Lady Bulldogs.
For the Falcons, Brittany Heinz finished perfect at the plate, hitting 3 for 3, while teammate Paige Bodner went 3 for 4. Cassandra Skeers, Grace Zeiler and Byrne all finished the day with a pair of hits.
MAC then hosted Thompson Falls during Senior Night at home on Saturday, where they needed a win to secure the No. 2 seed for the divisional tournament. The team started slow on the offensive side, only scoring one run during the first two innings.
In the bottom of the third the Lady Bulldogs broke the game wide open, scoring five runs to lead 6-0 heading into the fourth.
The Lady Hawks fought through the impressive pitching by Olson to put up four runs through the fourth and fifth innings, yet it was too little too, late as the Lady Bulldogs continued to smack everything pitcher Brittany Bray threw. Olson defeated Bray in the circle, improving her record to 13-3.
Eight runs later, MAC locked up the high seed they wanted by taking out the Lady Hawks 14-4.
The trio of Janeal McDonald, Nerby and Pope all had four hits, while Serena Long added three hits.
For Thompson Falls, Taylor Bolster, Kaylie Cox and Kelsey Fitchett all finished with a pair of hits, while Bray had one hit.
The Lady Bulldogs will head to Thompson Falls this weekend to begin divisional play.
