High school rodeo gets underway in Kalispell

The high school rodeo season got underway in Kalispell March 26 and 27 as cowboys and cowgirls from around the area made some strong showings at the event.
Will Powell of St. Ignatius and Ronan's Robert Rider were the top area jr. high performers at the event as Powell finished first in the tie-down roping Saturday with a time of 29.21 and was also the average winner in the event. Powell was also first both on Saturday and Sunday in the junior chute dogging and had the best average in the event.
Rider was first both days in the junior boys goat-tying event with times of 14.29 and 13.34 seconds. Rider also had the best average time in the event. Rider also had a pair of first-place showings in the breakaway event and had the best average in the event as well.
Arlee's Callie Otoupalik was the area's top cowgirl of the weekend as she finished first in the goat-tying event Saturday with a time of 11.59 and also finished third in the junior girl's barrels on the same day.
Among the high school competitors, Jessica Read of Plains had the best showing at the competition as she finished third in the goat-tying event Saturday and second on Sunday.
Arlee's Cody Sheridan was second in the tie-down roping Saturday and Polson's Lexi Bagnell was second in pole bending on the same day.
