Editor,
At the recent Polson Rural Fire District board meeting, I was given a lecture by a prominent member of the Polson Fire Department. Among other things, I was scolded for opposing some of the actions of the board. The reason for the scolding was basically that the board is always trying to do what is best for the community and nobody should interfere.
I want to point out that I, and many others, are also trying to do what is best for our community. Specifically, from my informal sampling about the board’s “crash tax” plan, an overwhelming majority of residents oppose it. In fact, outside of the board trustees and some members of the fire department, I have found only two people who support the crash tax. This strong opposition to crash taxes is consistent with similar sentiment across the country.
Especially in these trying economic times, most of us think that enacting a back-door crash tax - when the fire district has had revenue surpluses for the past three years - is not what is best for our community.
