POLSON — Cool weather and threatening grey skies didn’t stop Polson shoppers who turned out in force  for the first farmers' market of the 2011 season on May 6.

Several patrons said they had waited all winter for a taste of Jayna Brown’s freshly baked whole-wheat cinnamon rolls.

Gardeners were on the lookout for bedding plants. As well as vegetable and herb plants, there was leaf lettuce and spinach ready for a salad for dinner.

Vendors brought everything from woodworking, jewelry, bread and baked goods to fancy rubber gloves and homemade dog biscuits.

Linda Sheridan from Gardens of Summer in Dixon displayed a pickup load of plants, old-fashioned pinks and pansies. Sturdy heirloom tomato plants and other vegetables shared table space at the Ploughshare Farm booth.

Polson Farmers Market secretary Tonya Truman said all 54 market spots are filled. Some spots are even double booked with a booth selling flowers trading off with another vendor later in the season.

Many of the vendors were also here last year, but there are some new faces and products, too. Next week the market will have the capability to accept EBT/Debit/Credit and SNAP cards.

President LouAnne Hoskinson collected booth rent and with Truman’s help, kept the market running smoothly. They urged shoppers and browsers to vote on the Farmer’s Market logo. Several local artists have submitted entries. The winning design will be printed on T-shirts and shopping bags.

Polson Farmer’s Market will be held each Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May through October on Third Avenue West downtown.

A second Farmer’s Market called the Polson Bay Farmer’s Market also opened May 6 at the old location by the Masonic Lodge.

Francis and Norman McGeaughay of McGeaughay Old Time Farms are heading up the Polson Bay Farmer’s Market.  they can be reached at 676-3630. The market will be open each Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
