POLSON — Giant sunflowers with free form petals in different shades of gold and yellow and a wall of black and white cats all wearing boots are just some of the art hung on the walls at Cherry Valley School on April 28.
It was Cherry Valley Night of the Arts. This year it’s titled Art Across the Curriculum. With young children art is incorporated into most subjects and all the classrooms. All four hallways sported galleries from each class, and the gym had an individual piece from each student.
Graffiti walls were set up in the hallways so children, parents, friends and grandparents could leave some art or at least their name.
An additional activity was the art scavenger hunt, which listed prints for families to find. One question from the hunt was “Can you find the ballet dancers?” The painting children and families were looking for was “The Dancing Class” by Edgar Degas painted in the early 1900s. When all the paintings were located, students earned cookies as prizes.
If cookies didn’t quench a sweet tooth, lollipops were on sale for a quarter to raise money for the arts at Cherry Valley.
Young artists could visit four classrooms for art projects. They were:
Portrait/still life in Mrs. Bowen’s room
Make an insect in Mrs. Norman’s room
Construction in Ms. Hall’s room
Ping pong painting in the Art House
Joanie Bowen teaches art at Cherry Valley. She said little kids can do anything, and they love to express themselves.
The school full of colorful paintings, drawings, sculptures and mixed media certainly exemplified student expression.
