MISSOULA—Junior Brady Potts had never picked up a shot put before this track and field season. Now he finds himself standing on the coveted podium at the State A,C track and field meet in Missoula.
Potts threw his personal best of 45 feet, seven inches to place sixth at state. This was a huge accomplishment for Potts, who competes in football and wrestling, but had never considered track and field a sport for him.
I’m not a very fast person, so I did the throwing events,” Potts said. “I didn’t think I would be very good at it.”
“All the ones that beat Brady were seniors,” Arlee Head Coach Russ Baker said. “Considering that he did pretty good.”
“I want to come back next year and win it,” Potts said.
Junior Becca Nelson echoed Potts’ goal for next year. She took fourth in the javelin event with a throw of 120 feet, one inch.
“It was a great experience and something I wanted since I was a freshman,” Nelson said. “My goal next year is to take it.”
Also making it to the state meet in Missoula was freshman Whitney Malatare in the long jump and junior Rachelle Meidinger in the shot put.
“I thought everybody did great,” said Nelson. “It felt good to represent our school district.”
