RONAN — After a standing ovation, commencement speaker Tomy Parker had practical advice for Ronan High School’s class of 2011.
“You need to set goals,” Parker said, “short term, long term … If you don’t have a goal, you are never going to get anywhere.”
Even start with a small goal, Parker advised. For a person who’s known to be late all the time, just start being on time.
Everyone is going to face adversity in life, Parker said, “Facing adversity is the only time you see who your true friends are,” Parker noted.
“Nothing will take the place of perserverance,” he added. “Don’t quit.”
Urging graduates to take pride in what they do and do the best they can at it, Parker also said respect was important.
When he was in high school, Parker said he didn’t listen to anybody. But he’s learned since then that most adults are trying to help.
Parker congratulated the graduates saying, “If there is one thing you take away from my speech, you guys have done something amazing with your life (graduating from high school.)”
Knowing celebrations are imminent, Parker cautioned graduates to not do anything stupid.
Valedictorian Alex Dulmes and salutatorian Hayley Walston also spoke, mentioning the bright future of all the graduates.
Ronan High School principal Tom Stack presented the “Big G” Award to Angelica Lozeau. The award is in honor of Dick Gallagher, RHS Principal for two decades, and is presented to a student who has succeeded despite great odds.
