POLSON — A fire at 108 Eighth Ave. W. on the Fourth of July started in one of the back bedrooms in the house by a man trying to fuse together some fireworks. Firefighters aren’t sure what ignited the fireworks, but they exploded with a “big white flash” and the man exited the house. Although the house was not totaled, it sustained about $100,000 worth of damage to both contents and structure, according to Karen Sargeant, Polson Volunteer Fire Department public information officer.
If there was anything lucky about the fire, it was that the fire department was preparing for the Fourth of July fireworks, and 28 firefighters responded.
“We had it knocked down in about 10 minutes,” Sargeant said.
Sargeant added it was a great cooperative effort between the firefighters and Polson Police Department officers, who directed traffic so firefighters could “drag hose.”
When firefighters first arrived, they were informed there might be someone in the residence. The male subject was out of the house and came running up to firefighters to identify himself. No one was injured in the blaze, Sargeant added, and the Red Cross was called in to aid the residents.
